Like a butterfly, Lily Virginia has emerged from the studio that served as her cocoon, to reinvent her sound and musical direction. The results are brilliant and are being released one song at a time over the next few months with a live music video for each song shot during the recording of the album at Studio 42 in Brooklyn. At a later date, the whole collection titled “Play Me Twice”, which was recorded and produced by Alessio Romano, will be released in album form.

Her latest songs were on full display Friday night at a packed BAMcafe Live in the main Sharpe building on the expanding Brooklyn Academy of Music grounds in downtown Brooklyn. The room was buzzing from the moment the band started soundcheck 45 minutes before their scheduled start time. When they were introduced it was standing room only in the great event space, and many were standing. Her set was uplifting and the musicianship was tight. The crowd was responsive and attentive from the first notes to the last. While dancing didn’t break out in the aisles, it was close. Many a chair had to be tightened after all the seat dancing that went on.

The purity and beauty of Lily’s voice was perfectly complimented by the talented musicians she has surrounded herself with. New album producer Alessio Romano pulled double duty on  the drums, Scott Kapelman played bass and Andre Vasconcelos tore it up on lead guitar.

Miss Virginia also took the time during the set to show off her skills on the ukulele. Her channeling of The spirit of Amanda Palmer was spot on and meshed perfectly with her full band songs as well as duets with guitarist Vasconcelos on a few songs. Before the crowd was ready the night had come to it’s conclusion. While they were able to squeeze one last ukulele number out of Lily, it was quick and followed by the telltale rise of the house lights. With this liftoff, we can’t wait to see what heights Lily will rise to!
